Two hours after the final whistle had gone PSV Ronald Koeman conducted the customary post-match press conference and still thought it was almost unreal PSV had retained their title. The PSV coach had celebrated on the pitch in subdued mood, but intimated he was absolutely delighted having won the Dutch title. “I am unbelievably happy with this title; this is the third time I win a title”, said Koeman.
While the players were still celebrating in the dressing room, PSV coach Ronald Koeman reviewed the championship game and the past season in the press room. “It is still almost unreal. We knew we had to win our game and score a lot of goals. We had a dream start scoring twice within ten minutes, but Vitesse did not want to be just led to the slaughter and pulled one back. After the break we played great football. It may sum up the past campaign. At the restart after the winter break we had an eleven-point lead over our closest rivals, but we have dropped a great many precious points in the second part of the campaign. “
Newspapers extensively published reports about the crisis at PSV and questions were raised about an alleged discord between Koeman and the players, but also between Koeman and the club’s chairman. “I have read a great many stories the past few weeks. If they had been true, I don’t think we would have performed as well as we have done today. I am awfully proud of our players and I am delighted with the way they battled today. I also enjoy doing my job here Eindhoven. I have indicated I would like to stay with PSV next season as well, but other people will eventually decide my fate. I hope that this issue will be clarified soon.”
Phillip Cocu announced after the game he would be leaving PSV. The PSV captain may continue somewhere abroad, but has not made up his mind yet. “It’s a sad loss for PSV and for football fans”, was Koeman’s first reaction. “Cocu has gained so much experience and he always has a positive outlook. I don’t think we’ll ever find a second Coco, because actually there is no one.”
The PSV squad have a day-off on Monday, but will gather at De Herdgang training ground on Tuesday at 16:00. “We will then announce the schedule for the next few weeks. Some players are called up to take part in the Copa America, but most of them are looking forward to going on a well-deserved holiday. We will continue training, but in pleasantly relaxed circumstances.” Ronald Koeman was finally asked what he intends to do the next few weeks. “I think I’m going to sit in front of the telly and comfortably watch the play-off games at home!”
