PSV's Champions League opponents experienced mixed fortunes over the weekend. Atlético Madrid, whom PSV entertain in Eindhoven tomorrow night in their UEFA Champions league 2008/09 opening game, slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Real Valladolid. Atlético enjoyed a numerical advantage for seventy minutes, but the home side recorded a win all the same. Liverpool earned a win at Anfield and Marseille drew level with Girondins Bordeaux.
Atlético suffer defeat
The team from Madrid were without John Heitinga after the Holland international had picked up a minor injury in his country's 2-1 win over Macedonia. The defender is set to be available again for his side's clash with PSV. Although Pedro López was given his marching orders after 22 minutes, Valladolid took a 2-0 lead. Atlético striker Sergio Agüero, who came on as a substitute after the break, reduced the deficit on 55 minutes, but Atlético did not succeed in scoring any more goals in the remaining 35 minutes.
Liverpool win and Marseille draw level
Liverpool, who will play host to PSV on Wednesday 1 October, did enjoy the sweet taste of success. They came from one goal down to beat Champions League winners Manchester United 2-1 at Anfield. United took an early lead after three minutes, but manager Rafael Benítez's team staged a successful comeback. Manchester defender Wes Brown scored an unfortunate own goal and Ryan Babel netted a late goal to give the hosts a 2-1 victory. Saturday's top clash in the French league between Girondins Bordeaux and Olympique Marseille ended in a 1-1 draw. Bakary Koné was on target for Marseille.
